When it comes to painting, the color gets all the glory, but the tools you use can make or break the final look. One of the most essential (and often overlooked) tools is your paint roller. The right roller can save you time, reduce mess, and help you achieve that smooth, even finish you're after. The wrong one? Let’s just say no one wants lint on their living room walls.
So how do you choose the right roller for the job? Here’s a breakdown of what to consider, from nap length to roller material.

1. Know your surface
Start with the surface you’re painting:
-
Smooth surfaces (like drywall, ceilings, or wood doors): Use a short nap roller (¼" to ⅜") for a clean, even finish.
-
Semi-rough surfaces (lightly textured walls or ceilings): A ⅜" to ½" nap is your go-to.
-
Rough or textured surfaces (brick, stucco, concrete): Go big with a ¾" to 1" nap roller to reach all the grooves.
Repaint pro tip: If your wall has any existing imperfections, like old roller marks or patchy spots, choose a slightly longer nap to help even things out visually.

2. Nap Length 101
A roller’s nap is the length of its fibers, and it affects how much paint it holds and how much texture it leaves behind.
-
¼" nap – Best for ultra-smooth surfaces
-
⅜" nap – Ideal for most interior walls
-
½" nap – Great for slightly textured areas
-
¾" nap – Designed for rough or porous surfaces
When in doubt, start with a ⅜" nap. It’s the most versatile and beginner-friendly option.
Repaint pro tip: The thicker the nap, the more paint it holds. However, that also means it may leave more texture behind. Use a test roll on cardboard or scrap drywall to preview the finish.

3. Material Matters
Different materials suit different paints:
-
Synthetic (polyester or nylon): Best for latex paints. They hold their shape and clean easily.
-
Natural (lambswool or mohair): Great for oil-based paints. They give a super-smooth finish but require more care.
-
Blended Fabric: The best of both worlds. This type of material is perfect if you switch between paint types.
At Repaint Studios, our reusable paint trays are designed to work with any nap type, because great tools should adapt to your style, not the other way around. Speaking of great tools, the Repaint Tray is made of reusable silicone. Leave your paint to dry, peel it out, wash and voila — both you, and the environment are happy painters. Should your Repaint Tray ever become damaged, take advantage of our recyling program and receive a discount on your next purchase. Yay, sustainability!
Repaint pro tip: If you’re using high-gloss or semi-gloss paint, a high-quality natural or mohair roller will give you that flawless, glass-like finish.

4. Pick Your Width
-
Standard (9") – Ideal for walls and large surfaces
-
Mini (4"–6") – Perfect for cabinets, trim, or tight spaces
-
Jumbo* (12"+) – For pros tackling big jobs fast.
Repaint pro tip: Mix and match! Use a standard roller for broad strokes and a mini roller for corners and cut-ins to avoid switching between brush and roller.
*The Repaint Tray currently fits 9-inch rollers, but don’t fret! Our product development team is working on different sizes of the Repaint Tray in the future. 5. Quality > Quantity
Cheap rollers shed fibers, hold less paint, and leave uneven finishes. Look for high-density, lint-free roller covers — especially if you're painting a high-visibility space. If you have accidentally bought a cheap roller, no worries because even the pros make mistakes. Use painters tape to take off shed fibers from your roller. TikTok says so.
Repaint pro tip: Lightly dampen your roller cover with water before loading it up. This helps it absorb paint evenly from the start.

6. Keep It Rolling with the Repaint Tray
If you’re tackling multiple rooms or planning future projects, a reusable tray is essential. The Repaint Tray is designed for convenience; just seal it up between coats to keep your paint fresh for up to 21 days.
Repaint pro tip: Throw your brush and short paint roller inside the Repaint Tray with liner to help keep those from drying out as well. No refrigeration needed. Say goodbye to those flimsy, crusty disposables and hello to a better, more eco-friendly solution!
