Why Paint Brushes Get Stiff in the First Place 🖌️

Paint brushes become hard and unusable when paint dries deep inside the bristles.

This often happens when:

  • Brushes aren't cleaned thoroughly after use

  • Paint dries near the ferrule (the metal part of the brush)

  • Brushes sit too long between painting sessions

  • Leftover paint hardens inside the bristles

Once paint cures, water alone usually isn't enough to remove it.

That's where this simple brush-restoring trick comes in.

The Easy Hack to Clean Dried Paint Brushes What you'll need

Before tossing that dried-up brush in the trash, try this simple method.

What You'll Need ⬇️

  • White vinegar

  • A small pot or heat-safe container

  • Water

  • A paint brush cleaning tool

For this project, we recommend the Zibra Paintbrush Cleaning Tool, which is specifically designed to remove dried paint from deep within the bristles without damaging your brush. It's one of our favorite tools for restoring old paint brushes and making cleanup easier.

Step 1: 🔥 Heat the Vinegar

  • Pour enough white vinegar into a pot to cover the bristles.
  • Warm the vinegar until it's hot, but not boiling.

Step 2: 💧 Soak the Brush

  • Place the dried paint brush into the warm vinegar and allow it to soak for about 20–30 minutes.
  • As the vinegar works, it helps soften hardened paint brushes by loosening paint trapped inside the bristles.

Step 3: 🎨 Work Out the Paint

  • Remove the brush and gently comb through the bristles.
  • You'll often notice old paint beginning to flake away.
  • If you have a paint brush cleaning tool like the Zibra Paintbrush Cleaning Tool, use it to work through the bristles and remove softened paint trapped near the ferrule. This is often where the most stubborn buildup hides.

If needed, repeat the soaking process until the brush becomes flexible again.

Step 4: 🫧 Wash and Rinse

  • Once the paint has loosened, wash the brush thoroughly with warm soapy water.
  • Rinse well and reshape the bristles before allowing the brush to dry completely.

Does This Work on Every Paint Brush? 🤔

Not always.

If a brush has been sitting for years or has severe paint buildup, the damage may be permanent.

However, many DIYers are surprised by how much life they can restore to brushes that seemed completely ruined.

It's definitely worth trying before replacing them.

Instead of rushing to clean everything immediately, keeping your paint tools protected between sessions can make a huge difference.

That's one reason Billie, inventor of the Repaint Tray, designed a reusable silicone paint tray with an airtight lid. It helps keep paint fresh between painting sessions so you can pause a project and come back later without wasting paint or rushing to clean everything immediately.
